Law Firm Content Development
"How do I get to the top of Google?" This is a question we are asked all the time. Simply put there are a quite a few questions to be asked first, for example; are you referring to pay per click, local results or the first web results shown? For now we'll assume you mean the first web results, this means we are ignoring local results and sponsored links.
What Google wants from your site
Google ranks sites based on an extremely complicated secret formula. It comes down to many, many different factors. At the most basic core Google wants to see two things on your site.

If you are a cerebral palsy lawyer then Google wants to see your site full of original information about cerebral palsy. Such as causes, treatments, etc, etc. If you want your site to rank for a keyword you must have a good amount of text to back up those keywords. Lets take a look at some solid Do's and Don't
Do
- Include a lot of relevant ORIGINAL useful information.
Do NOT
- Repeat 'maryland cerebral palsy lawyer' on your page a million times in hopes to somehow 'trick' Google, it won't work and looks absolutely freaking horrible.
Google wants to see a lot of text but notice I highlighted the word original up there. It must be original text, the text should also be updated on a regular basis. Google wants to see your site grow over time, so start small and keep at it. Adding relevant text on a regular basis is the best proven want to increase rankings in the search engines. So why doesn't everyone do this? It's a lot of work. In fact its a ton of work. Like everything else hard work pays off. The more text you have on your site the higher you will rank and you will also have more people link to your site which is something else that Google just loves. Links!
Links from other sites to your site is big
Let's say you wrote a great article about how the best way to win an auto accident claim. Now lets say a big web site like CNN links to your article. When CNN links to your article it shows Google that 'Hey a big site likes the small site's article about auto accidents. This must mean that small site knows what they are talking about when it comes to auto accidents.' Now I also said that links are huge but they are not always that huge. Why? Well like any system people tried to abuse this system and came up with schemes to 'sell' links from the big guys to the small guys. Since then Google has cracked down hard on this behavior and rightfully so.
Bottom line - don't try and cheat the system. Writing good content will win you links over the long run.
What else can I do to increase links to my site?
The more content on your site that is original and helpful the better. Once you write content submit it to as many other sites as possible. Just to name a few, StumbleUpon, Digg, and Del.icio.us. These great (and free!) sites allow you to post your content to their sites so the world can see it. They link back to your site at no charge.
Get a blog! This is extremely common with the legal field. Many firms have multiple blogs focusing on different areas of practice that have links back to their main firm web site.
I don't have time to just sit here and write!
Not many law firms have the time or resources to simply write content for their web site or blog on a regular basis. Even with a writer or intern on staff to create the articles there is still the act of posting the article and linking the article to the web site throughout the pages.
