Top 5 Web Site Mistakes

No matter if you are a web developer or a business owner there are important mistakes you do not want to make when creating a web site. Lets go over a few top mistakes we see people make.

Not adding content

If your goal is to come up higher in the search engines higher you will want to work on creating content. Content is king, but not just any content. It should be relevant to the reader and be related to your web site. If you are a law firm, you should author articles about law and the area of your firm. If you don't add content to your site on a regular basis you cannot expect to rank highly in the search engines.

Not being optimized

This one is more for the developers. Your code needs to be as a clean and optimized as possible. We are all guilty of making mistakes or taking short cuts to save time. However make sure your code doesn't have any inline CSS, make sure you provide an ALT tag for all images. Making sure your code is clean will make Google feel better about you.

Use Google's Webmaster Tools

Google's Webmaster Tools are fantastic. They will allow you to quickly troubleshoot any errors in your site. Most notibly, dead links. If you aren't using GWT, start immediately. Submit a sitemap and be amazed at what you find out.

Not using Social Media

Poor design

I'm not going to get into bad design too deep. However I will say some great looking web sites have a bad 'conversion design'. What I mean is its difficult for the viewer to contact the law firm. I recommend strongly to have a short contact box on the main page. Something that is in their face and doesn't require them to scroll down.
